Who Needs Sedation Dentistry?

What Types of Sedation Dentistry Are Available?

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): Nitrous oxide is simple to administer — patients inhale this gas through a tube. It’s a popular method of sedation dentistry among patients because as soon as the gas is removed, you can walk around, drive, go back to work - do whatever you like.
Oral conscious sedation (oral medication): This type of sedation dentistry is a pill your dentist gives you before your treatment. It may be Valium or another type of anti-anxiety medication. Oral conscious sedation medications can be mixed with nitrous oxide to get a deeper effect. When you get this type of sedation dentistry, you will need someone to drive you home after.
IV sedation: IV sedation is the deepest form of sedation dentistry. Depending on your procedure, you may be put in what is known as “twilight sleep,” where you are heavily sedated but still conscious. For some procedures, you may be fully unconscious. This type of sedative takes time to wear off, so you will also need a ride home from our dentist's office if you have IV sedation.
Local anesthetic: Is the most minimal of sedation—you are conscious and aware of the procedure but do not feel anything. This is usually administered via injection into the area we will be working on.
General sedation: Which renders you completely unconscious, may be required for more advanced dental implant procedures in Nashville, such as Zygomatic and Pterygoid implants.) However, many patients prefer just to be completely unconscious during any implant procedure. All sedation is performed by a board-certified anesthesiologist on-site so that you go into a deep sleep and wake up with a brand-new smile! Due to the nature of this sedation, you will need someone to drive to and from your appointment.
